Rock of Ages, cleft for me

Gospel Crying to the Lord

English1058
1
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me from its guilt and power.
2
Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All could never sin erase,
Thou must save, and save by grace.
3
Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless, look to Thee for grace:
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
4
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice and for reminding us that sometimes we need to hit rock bottom in order to know that Jesus is the rock at the bottom.

As a non believer and agnostic I find the lyrics and music of it the closest to Christian belief as one can reach. It symbolises everything.

We searched everywhere for this hymn for our morning devotion

my grandma loves it dearly but couldn’t find the full version in her hymn books. Finally, she found the Yoruba version, and we sang it together. Singing it in Yoruba brought a deep joy and connection. It made me appreciate the beauty of the language and love the hymn even more.

I always appreciate the comments in this hymnal. I chose this song last night for our English group—not because of any special feeling, but because its truth stood out as worth presenting. This morning, as we read and sang it, that truth became the lesson itself. A heartfelt lesson, its lyrics and melody worthy of our voices.

This song woke up from sleep this morning and I found joy unimaginable in the presence of the most high Jehovah. Jehovah I thank you for your love.
