1
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee;
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Nearer to Thee;
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
2
Though, like a wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
The sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
3
There let me see the sight,
An open heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
An open heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
4
Then, with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise,
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise,
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Sarah Fuller Flower Adams (1805-1848) was an English poet and playwright renowned for her contributions to literature and music, particularly in the context of religious hymnody. Born to Benjamin Flower, a political writer, and Eliza Gould Flower in Harlow, Essex, she displayed artistic talents from a young age, performing dramatic readings and singing classical music. After moving to London, she engaged with a circle of intellectuals and reformers, cultivating significant friendships with figures such as Robert Browning and Harriet Martineau.
Adams is perhaps best known for her hymn "Nearer My God to Thee," written at the age of twenty-one, and she composed a total of fourteen hymns, alongside translations of Spanish and Portuguese works. Her marriage to fellow writer William Brydges Adams supported her literary pursuits, but her health declined in the late 1830s, which ultimately led her to focus more on writing than acting. Despite her struggles with health, she produced notable works, including the five-act dramatic poem "Vivia Perpetua." After the death of her sister Eliza and her own deteriorating condition, Adams ceased writing, and she passed away from tuberculosis in 1848. Her legacy endures through her hymns, plays, and the impact she had on the literary and artistic communities of her time.

This hymn is a deep inspiration of a young sister. This alludes to Jacob‘s first trip to Bethel where he saw the ladder to heaven and rested his head on a rock. We know this is a picture of Christ connecting us to God. It is here Jacob rested in the realization he had a relationship with the God of his father. And it is here that he realized the nearness of God.
This hymn mirrors my feeling this morning that of wanting to be nearer to the Lord regardless of my situation. He is my nearest and dearest friend.

In reply to Gideon Raymond from Juaso, Ashanti Akim South Ghana; August 30, 2018:
You ask why our woes are still chasing us. Our woes chase us because we still living in the flesh, we are not glorified until we stand before the Lord in Heaven. In this life Christians will suffer from sickness, pain, and trials unending. Just as Christ suffered when He died a horrible death on the cross for our sins, we too will suffer as long as we are living on this side of heaven. The challenges of this world end when we take our last breath; until then our woes will not stop chasing us. True peace is not the absence of trials and challenges, it is simply being aware of God’s presence in our life. We get through this life by staying close to the Lord moment by moment of every day; keep singing and reciting Nearer My God to Thee, the lyrics are a soothing balm to our souls.
