I’ve seen the lightning flashing

I’ve seen the lightning flashing,
  And heard the thunder roll;
I’ve felt sin’s breakers dashing,
  Trying to conquer my soul;
I’ve heard the voice of Jesus,
  Telling me still to fight on;
He promised never to leave me,
  Never to leave me alone.
  No, never alone,
  No, never alone,
He promised never to leave me,
  Never to leave me alone;
No, never alone,
  No, never alone,
He promised never to leave me,
    Never to leave me alone.
The world’s fierce winds are blowing,
  Temptations are sharp and keen;
I feel a peace in knowing
  My Savior stands between;
He stands to shield me from danger,
  When earthly friends are gone,
He promised never to leave me,
  Never to leave me alone.
When in affliction’s valley,
  I’m treading the road of care,
My Savior helps me to carry
  My cross when heavy to bear;
My feet entangled with briars,
  Ready to cast me down;
My Savior whispered His promise,
  Never to leave me alone.
He died for me on the mountain,
  For me they pierced His side,
For me He opened that fountain,
  The crimson, cleansing tide;
For me He waiteth in glory,
  Seated upon His throne;
He promised never to leave me,
  Never to leave me alone.

There is none like my God. The present help in times of trouble. He has promised never to leave me alone therefore I put my trust in Him. The thought He has for me is the thought of good to bring me to an expected end. Glory to His name.

This song has been a comforting assurance to me just to think that Jesus has promised never to leave me alone. I live in that assurance and claim victory every day because with Him by my side nothing can conquer me.

This hymn is good to sing during a thunderstorm.

Psalm 29 reminds me of this hymn. The last verse of the Psalm says that God gives strength to His people and blesses them with peace during storms.

There is a 5th stanza added by Rev. J. F. Jernigan

5. He's given me the promise

that He will come again,

And when He's reigning in glory,

I'll go there through His name;

And when in that land of beauty

I find a "home, sweet home,"

He promised to receive me;

Then never will leave me alone.
