Alas! and did my Savior bleed

1
Alas! and did my Savior bleed?
  And did my Sov’reign die,
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?
2
Was it for sins that I had done
  He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
  And love beyond degree!
3
Well might the sun in darkness hide,
  And shut his glories in,
When the incarnate Maker died
  For man, His creature’s sin.
4
Thus might I hide my blushing face
  While His dear cross appears
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.
5
But drops of grief can ne’er repay
  The debt of love I owe;
Here Lord, I give myself away:
’Tis all that I can do.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and the dd

One of my favorite hymns , here in the Philippines, classic hymns are seldom sung in churches, but my life has been intertwined with these hymns and I really love them. My other favorite is When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

A story is told of a young Jewess who was saved in a remarkable way through this hymn. She had been out shopping and had returned home with the provisions for her household. When unwrapping some paper from a package the first verses of this hymn caught her eye, and she read on. This was strange news to her and try as she would, she was unable to shake off the impression created by such startling words; so she obtained a Bible and started seeking for the truth. It was then the young woman found her Messiah and Lord in Jesus and was saved.

It was one of Watt’s hymns that was used in the conversion of Fanny Crosby, the famous blind hymn writer, who was converted on November 1850. But long before that day, many a seeking soul has been drawn to the foot of the cross at the sweet sound of the same tender lines.

“Alas, and did my Savior bleed?

And did my Sovereign die?

Would He devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I? ”

The best medicine for a cold, unloving heart. Best taken with the melody.
