I have been thinking about this wonderfully assuring hymn for the last few days!

I am in the midst of a Bible study on the Armor of God. I have taken discipleship classes and in book 3 the armor is detailed and shown how we can fight and be on guard. But we know the battle is not ours to fight alone. Yesterday I came across another reference to the name for God: The Lord of Host… and as I pulled out my Names of God book, I refreshed myself with its meaning. This hymn was referenced for verse 2. So, here I am today singing it and worshiping God our Lord of Host, Lord Sabaoth. I remember as a child singing it and not understanding the reference. I praise God now that I am aware of His power, might, and strength and that He is our defender and guide. Thank you for this site, that helps us all connect to the hymns we grew up on. My church though different from my youth, still sings a hymn from ‘old’ with all the newer songs as well. Thanking God for music ministry in our churches.

This hymn goes deep for this day and age. I love how it is understandable yet hide so you have to think about it!

When I read the lyrics of this hymn this morning, I realize how rich and full of truth it is. I have been taught there are 4 main things that we must know and experience as a chrstian. They are the gospel, Satan, the church according to our own vision, and Christ’s preeminence in ALL things. This morning I was impressed with how strong our enemy is. If you are fighting, you must know these strengths of your enemy or opponent. I’m afraid often times I am naïve of the craftiness of the enemy. He tends to creep into different areas of my life. But I remember in the gospels when the disciples were preaching the gospel They were taught to bind the strongman through prayer. Yes Satan is strong but God is stronger! Although it seems that the devil is winning now on earth, we know God’s Word will prevail and He like a fortress will keep us from evil.

Likewise in first line of 4th verse, “Word” should be capitalized

Very comforting and apt at this point in time in the world. One feels there’s no hope for peace but we serve a God of peace
