Faith of our fathers, living still

The Church Her Faith

English830
1
Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword,
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!
2
Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
And blest would be their children’s fate,
If they, like them should die for thee:
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!
3
Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto thee;
And through the truth that comes from God
Mankind shall then indeed be free.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!
4
Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

This hymn fills my spirit with wonder... each line is like a cord through my heart. It leaves me wondering about the days of long ago and how humans have defied great odds to keep their faith alive and pass it down to each generation

I just want to make my pledge having seen this song that I will hold unto my faith, contend for it, and I won't love my life unto the dead.

May God help me.

Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. (Psa 22:4 kjv)

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the people of Israel when in Egypt, in the times of the judges, and in all ages, as they were sojourners, and went from place to place, especially the patriarchs, and were often in trouble and distress, when they called upon you LORD, looked to YOU, and put their trust and confidence in YOU. Their confidence and trust was not in themselves, their own wisdom, riches, and strength, not in others, not in any mere creature, nor in any outward thing, or arm of flesh. But in you the Lord Jehovah, in whom is everlasting strength Hallelujah. They believed in your power that you were able to help and deliver them, and they had faith in you Lord. They depended upon YOUR WORD and PROMISE, and were PERSUADED you would never suffer YOUR faithfulness to fail. Our fathers committed themselves to you Lord, and stayed themselves on you. they constantly and continually put their faith and trust in you at all times.

Our father Paul and others apostles hung their faith only on you and the SAYINGS OF YOURS which is always true.

That is why PAUL will say, “FOR ME TO LIVE IS CHRIST AND TO DIE IS GAIN” because they have the FAITH knowing whom they believed and are persuaded that you are able to keep that which they commit unto you.

OH FAITH OF OUR FATHERS A HOLY FAITH, I WILL BE TRUE TO YOU TILL DEATH. Amen

I love the song, I heard it in deeper life. Spiritual the song has nothing to do with our local churches, this song also talks about the faith our fathers demonstrated which is recorded in the book of Hebrews 11. Lets execute the faith of Abraham, Enoch and all our fathers who by faith believed in God.

I read those comments I too learned the version with Mary's prayers.

But on looking more into the author he was an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1847 and write faith of our fathers two years later.

The original words where county back there and Mary's prayers must have been added later.

I remember this being used as a catholic battle hymn.

But that wasn't the intention He was obviously writing about going back to our original faith remember Britain was once catholic.

Also I think with his conversion in -1847 and writing this 1849.

We can safely assume it's definitely a catholic hymn.

Especially when he was criticised and heckled during his life by Methodists for introducing catholic theology into his mass.
