Onward Christian soldiers!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!
DOnward

At the name of Jesus
Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise:
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise!
At the name of Jesus
Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise:

Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God:
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one Body we—
One in faith and Spirit,
One eternally.

Crowns and thrones may perish,
Kingdoms rise and wane;
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
’Gainst the Church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise,
Which can never fail.

Onward, then, ye people!
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor
Unto Christ, the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

My mom is 90 and I have become her caregiver. She walks short distances gingerly with her walker and me helping her from behind. We always sing that song to strengthen her resolve to get up and walk. It helps her fight the battle with immobility in old age! We only knew the first few lines, and so I decided to look up the rest.

What does it mean to be a soldier for Christ?

I hear this song sang a lot on little house on the Prairie in there church services and I happen to fall in love with it talks about our fellow man neighbors and friends following Jesus with His cross and it tells me no matter where I go my king Jesus will clear my path. How great is that.

Have the lyrics have been changed, since I sang this as a child in the '80s; sure I've heard the same tune but different words? Shame they have to change things & that my kids don't even sing hymns at school now; no shared heritage with that - replaced by sickly soppy & ironic ditties about how wonderful & safe school is, when it's actually dangerously overcrowded & rife with bullying.
But when some feel a need to classify hymns with misogynist & bogus labels, 'manly' as positive & 'womanly' as negative, maybe you get what you deserve...

Good gutsy, manly hymn, although I would amend the words 'with the cross of Jesus going on before' to 'looking unto Jesus who is gone before'. Better by far than the insipid and womanly lyrics of Doerksen's 'Faithful One' - 'you pick me up when I fall done' - how pathetic'! What is wrong with 21st Century evangelicals that they should want to sing such drivel every Sunday? - Isaiah 3:12.

Gets to my heart strings every time this is one of the best hymns we have.

I learned this as a child and still remember the words, how mighty those words are today!

Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith. We are complete in Him. Christ our King is our hope of Glory.
My best!
I love it.
