I’m pressing on the upward way

Longings For Growth in Christ

English396
1
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

This is a great song, not the same words as my redemption hymnal, I know they’re old fashioned words but they mean more and make more sense, glory

Eg

‘Beyond the mist I fain would rise, to rest beneath unclouded skies, above earths turmoil peace is found by those who dwell on higher ground ‘

The key to understanding the authors thought is in the chorus. Canaan is the promised good land and is a type of Christ. He is the solid rock we stand on. We must stand on Him having our hope and faith in Him. That is higher ground.

Here are some verses I found that help to see the source of hymn. It is such a healthy aspiration!

Psalm 61:2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalms 18: 31 For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God.

Isaiah 55: 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Colossians 3:2 AMP Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].

It's amazing that even though all these years, a number of these hymns are still relevant. Truly the word of God is timeless and eternal.

Glory to Jesus and thanks be to His Spirit for bringing me back to this Hymn
