Thou my everlasting Portion

Longings For a Closer Walk with Christ

English386
1
Thou my everlasting Portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
2
Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Not for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
3
Lead me through the vale of shadows,
Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

We used to sing this song in early 80s. While washing a car with bare hands the words, "Not for ease or worldly pleasure" strongly rang in my heart and so did the tune. Getting the music and lyrics online has revived my joy in the Lord.

I always love this hymn. As I was about to pray this morning, this hymn came to my mind. I have to search for it and sang it. May the bless the composer and those who are working tirelessly for others to access it.

This past weekend, the wicked schemes of man became quite real to me, but God saw me through. In it all, this hymn kept coming to me again and again, making me feel the need draw closer to God, and not put my trust in man.

I first heard this song when I was a kid and few months ago, the sound inspiration came to me and I went to my church keyboard and played it. It was later I asked for the lyrics of the song from persons who can understand the song through the sound and I got it. I am always inspired each time I play this song on keyboard. The song actually is not included in my church hymn. I serve as a church Organist in one of the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Port Harcourt.
