And can it be that I should gain

Assurance and Joy of Salvation Justified in Christ

English296
1
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2
’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love Divine!
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
3
He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
4
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
5
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

What is meant by the phrase "an interest in the Savior's blood"? Why "an interest"? Who is "the firstborn seraph"?

Charles Wesley, who, along with his brother, founded Methodism, was ordained in the Church of England in 1735. However, three years later, as he was studying his Bible, he wrote: “At midnight I gave myself to Christ, assured that I was safe whether sleeping or walking. I had the continual experience of His power, to overcome all temptation, and I was able to confess with joy and surprise that He was able to do exceedingly for me above what I could ask or think. ” Wesley had been raised in a Christian home, but was not yet certain of his own salvation. He wrote in his journal: “I now found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced at the hope of loving Christ. I saw that by faith I stood. ” Two days later, in his journal, he wrote that he had begun writing a hymn. This hymn was most likely “And Can it Be” because of the vivid testimony it contains. It was one of the first of more than 6, 000 hymns he wrote. He began the first stanza by expressing admiration at the love Jesus demonstrated for him by dying for him. Three days before, his brother John had expressed that his heart was “strangely warmed, ” and Charles was recovering from an illness when he heard a voice saying: “In the name of Jesus of Nazareth arise, and believe, and thou shall be healed of all thine infirmities. ” Charles got out of bed, picked up his Bible, and read in the Psalms: “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise onto our God. ” Moved and convicted Charles, reflected on these words until he was assured in his faith, recognizing it is by faith we are saved (Eph. 2:8). “And Can it Be” remains one of his most remarkable hymns expressing the joy of receiving salvation. Wesley opens with a question:

“And can it be that I should gain an interest in my Savior’s blood? ” “Died He for me— who caused His pain? ”

Then in the second stanza he follows by an exclamation:

‘Tis mystery all, the Immortal dies! ”
Both are typical of Wesley’s style and imagery.

I woke up this morning singing this hymn sweetly in my heart. I was, obviously, singing in my sleep. I praise God for His salvation through the eternal sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!
