And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be

’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love Divine!
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries

He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;

’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

It's like Charles Wesley couldn't believe that after all those years of serving the faith, that he finally got It's true meaning.
This song makes my soul soar and rejuvenates my faith.
One question: Did Charles Wesley write the music as well or was that added down the line like many other hymns of the time?

Can never get enough of this song. Remembered singing it at my first choir rehearsal. Back in ST Vincent my mother would sing this as her anthem even when she is doing her gardening Praise the Lord

I love this song so much. It blessed my heart each time I sing it especially when I sing it in my mother tongue or native language Kikuyu. My late father’s favorite song. He taught us this song at a very early age and when he was promoted to glory(Heaven) all of my 5 brother and ones sister, were wondering which song we will sing during our beloved daddy’s funnel. We were all in different places but when we called each other, we all had that one son and can it be that I should gain . It has been a blessing to my family and whenever I sing it I hear my Daddy Julius Kamwaro singing along with me. The seed our daddy planted with continue through all generations in Jesus name. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
