O Lord, as we consider Thee

Praise of the Lord His All-Inclusiveness

English190
1
O Lord, as we consider Thee,
We worship Thee for all Thou art;
Thou art so rich, so wonderful,
So dear and precious to our heart.

What Thou art meets our every need!
Our hearts o’erflow with praise to Thee!
All our desires Thou dost exceed
And satisfy continually.
2
Thou art the very God in truth,
The God who is both love and light;
The God who is to us our life,
The God in whom we all delight.
3
Thou also art a man indeed,
A man so fine, so good, so pure;
A man in whom our God delights,
A man who can our love secure.
4
Thou even art a lowly slave,
A slave of God to serve for us;
Obedient to the cross’s death
That we might be delivered thus.
5
Thou art, beside all these, a King,
A King in life and love to reign,
By God anointed with His pow’r
To rule with us in His domain.
6
Dear Lord, as we remember Thee,
We thus partake of all Thou art;
As we enjoy Thyself in love,
We share Thee as Thy counterpart.

I like to sing this hymn with one word changed in the chorus. Instead of what thou art, I sing who you art meets our every need. Then it matches the phrase in the last verse. ”We enjoy thy self in love. ” Certainly that is the highest experience of the Lord. Love is His greatest attribute..

amen! isn't it so precious that the Lord in this song is revealed backwards through the gospel---

Matthew portrayed Him as the King
Mark portrayed Him as a Slave
Luke portrayed Him as a Man
John portrayed Him as God.

yet, in the song, he is first portrayed as God, then Man, then Slave, then King.

I feel as if my experience in knowing Him has followed this reverse-gospel pattern.

I first came to know Him, objectively, as God.

then I came to know Him as a Man. someone who knew me and my emotions.

then as a Slave. sent to die that "we might be delivered thus."

then, finally, as a King. who should reign in my life.

and yet---He is all of these things at the same time.

and He is small enough to eat, daily, and large enough to "satisfy continually."

wow. what a God we have. so rich, so wonderful, so dear, and so precious.

Not Studying but Eating and Drinking

Although this may seem peculiar, many people read their Bible in this way and therefore do not derive any benefit. They study the “bone” of the word Abraham or the “beak” of the word Tamar. We need to let go of these things. We are here to eat the flesh of the “chicken, ” not the “bones. ” When reading the first seventeen verses of Matthew 1 , we should let go of the many names. But when we read verse 21 , which says, “She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins, ” we may understand that we are God’s people, so He must save us from our sins. We may then pray, “Lord, save me from my sins. ” After this the Holy Spirit may speak to us and point out our sins of hitting our children and scolding our wife for many years and that our temper is too poor. Spontaneously, we should confess these sins, saying, “Lord, my temper is too poor. I cannot overcome it. I have been in sin. But You are Jesus. You will save Your people from their sins. I am Your people. Surely You will save me from my sins. ” When we pray this way, we are eating the “meat. ” Following this, we may read: “‘They shall call His name Emmanuel’ (which is translated, God with us)” ( v. 23 ). Here is a bigger piece of “meat. ” We may pray, “Emmanuel! God with man! Lord, You are God with man! You are God, and I am man; You are with me. You are in me, and You are in my presence. ” These verses alone can fill us. During the day we will be praying that Jesus is saving His people from their sins and that God is with man. This kind of reading will make the Bible our food, supply, and nourishment. This kind of reading will bring the Bible into us as our life.
