Lo! in heaven Jesus sitting,
Christ the Lord is there enthroned;
As the man by God exalted,
With God’s glory He is crowned.
I’m writing this this Christmas morning with a heavy heart. I went to a church gathering last night. The message was from Luke chapter two. We all know the story of Jesus being born. This is wonderful. This is incarnation and it is a marvelous mystery. His birth was really was good news. God sent His only son to be joined to man. He became a man to redeem us. His name at this time was called Emmanuel, which is God with us.
My heart was burning. Don’t they know that this baby is now a man in the glory and that he has become the Life giving Spirit to be in us? NOW the Lord is that Spirit! His name is now Christ the highest name ever given and God has exalted Him as a man high above all.
At the end of the sermon there was an alter call. I was shocked that the gospel was not clearly spoken. We all know that Jesus was God and He was a man that died for the forgiveness of our sins. He was buried and on the third day He resurrected. You must believe this to even start your life with Christ.
Look how many times the word “man” is used in this hymn. God could not have completed his plan without this man. When He died as a full grown man of 33 years He had accomplished it all, not just redemption. As He died He said “It is done”. Oh Christ we worship you.
In verse 18 we see that the Lord is “the living One, ” the One who “became dead” and who is “living forever and ever. ” The very Christ who walks in the midst of the churches, who is the Head of the churches and to whom the churches belong, is the living One full of life. Hence, the churches also, as the expression of His Body, should be living, full of life, fresh, and strong. Hallelujah, we have a living Christ who has overcome death! Our Christ, who is the resurrected Christ, is living in us and among us. He is living forever and ever. What a living Christ we have in the recovery! In the recovery all the churches should be as living as Christ, full of life and overcoming death.
Lo! A man is now in heaven. I had to look up what lo meant. It is an archaic word. It means behold, there is some thing marvelous, something spectacular you must consider. Yes the God who was Spirit with limited expression, now can be expressed in someone touchable, something tangible. This man in the glory has become the comforter. That is Jesus as the Spirit that can come into us. Now God can be expressed by us. All this was accomplished by Christ the Son. This is why God exalted Him high above all. These old hymns are so full of truth and reality. They are like cliff notes that help us understand the Bible. The writers are clearly gifts from God.
I love this hymn. It tells me “This wonderful Jesus , who is enthroned in heaven and crowned with glory and honor” (2:9), is the greatest attraction in the universe.
If we consider what this hymn says regarding Christ's being God mingled with man, His putting on human nature, His dying according to God's plan, His resurrecting with a body, His ascending as a man, His sitting in the heavens, and His being crowned with God's glory, we will realize that this hymn is full of truth and enlightenment. This hymn is an expression of my holy, heavenly, and spiritual sentiment; it is an expression of the Christ whom I know and whom I have gained, experienced, and enjoyed.
Christ as the embodiment of the Triune God is both divine and human. The New Testament clearly reveals that in resurrection Jesus is still a man. In Matthew 24:30, the Lord Jesus said that He would come back as the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven with power and glory. At His coming back, the Lord Jesus will still be a man. Today in the heavens Christ is still a man. Hymn #132 in Hymns says:
Lo! in heaven Jesus sitting,
Christ the Lord is there enthroned;
As the man by God exalted,
With God's glory He is crowned.
In Acts 7 Stephen saw the Lord Jesus as the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (vv. 55-56). As the Son of Man, He is both divine and human. If He were only divine, He would be omnipotent, but He could not sympathize with us. As a man He is able to sympathize with our weaknesses (Heb. 4:15).
