A mighty Fortress is our God

1
A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
2
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
3
And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
4
That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

The basis of the reformation was the "rediscovery" of two pillars of Christian faith, "solo scriptura", or Scripture alone and "solo fidei", by faith alone, which knocked the legs out of the Roman Church making him deeply unpopular. The hymn is a response to the plots and persecution that followed.

These words should be song with might and power as it is to me a song of the ages. This is the song that the saints of the ruler and creator of the heaven and the earth will be singing through persecution as it was so through the dark periods before. Saints of God, I am urging us to keep the faith, the end is fast approaching.

"...the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still..."

Like the grass that withers and the flower that fades, so shall we go the way of this earth and into eternity, but only to find the highest supremacy of His truth--TRUTH that exists with us, or without us.

This has become my battle cry as I fight so many challenges that I know evil is behind to hinder me in God's work. Get out of my way Satan. We win in the end.

When the 9 people were murdered during their Bible Study Class this week in Charleston, SC, I wrote a note and felt so helpless for words of comfort and then remembered this wonderful hymn and the words seemed so perfect to send to them. It's always been one of my favorites and I hope it will help bring healing to the loved ones of those murdered in Charleston.

My favorite song, sang it in 3 languages when I was growing up in rural Tanzania where the Lutheran church came to our village about 100 years ago. He has been my fortress till today in my 72nd year and will be so for eternity, Hallelujah. Thank You Lord for giving us Martin Luther who fourght for our faith in Jesus by Your Grace.

Very inspiring and indeed encouraging. Only a close walk with God can cause one to write thus. I gues this is what is absent today. Luther had no other help but God. Like Christ Luther had nowhere to lay his head.

In all the changing scenes of life, this hymn shows the matchless and wonderful love of God. Only eternity itself will demonstrate fully His mercy and grace through the Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!

I love this hymn. I love all the the old hymns and know them all. I feel so good to hear and sing them to myself. Everyday I have a song in my heart to sing. it makes me feel good.

This time of trial and confusion, sickness and weaknesses, darkness and struggle, this hymn means so much. In this darkness Christ becomes the only light. "This is good, and pleases God our Savior."
