Stanza 1 - blessed Trinity
Rev. 4:8b ... Holy, holy, holy, Lord God the Almighty, who was and who is and who is coming.
Footnotes 1- The mentioning of holy three times, as in Isa. 6:3, implies that God is triune.
Stanza 2 - holiness and glory
The twenty-four elders will fall before Him who sits upon the throne, and they will cast their crowns before the throne (Rev. 4:10); And before the throne there was as it were a glassy sea ... (Rev. 4:6).
As the seraphim, they are for God’s holiness (Isa. 6:3), referring to God’s nature.
As the cherubim, they are for God’s glory (Ezek. 10:18-19; Herb. 9:5), referring to God’s expression.

This hymn is sung to God in worship, and is taken both from Revelation (where the four and twenty elders cast their crowns before the throne of the Lamb of God, slain before the foundation of the world, AND Isaiah 6 where the 6 angels praised God.
In Isaiah 6 the saved sinner Isaiah was convicted of sin by the holiness of God. He had to hide parts of his body from the effects of the holiness of God, whilst the unfallen Angels need not hide any part of their beings as they are sinless .
The gospel is that The Lord Jesus was slain in our place, bearing our sins on the cross and was resurrected from the dead. If people repent and believe the gospel, they shall be born again, and only then shall they be able to sing this hymn in spirit and in truth (John 4).
One other hymn comes to mind at this point 'eternal light, eternal light how pure the soul must be.
This song is featured in the Andy Griffith movie,”Angel in my pocket”. I watch that movie many times with my daughter. We happened to catch Andy on another rerun and my daughter said,”howy, howy mom!” I said ,”yes! you smarty girl.”
