He Hideth My Soul

1
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
  A wonderful Savior to me;
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
  Where rivers of pleasure I see.
  He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
  That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
  And covers me there with His hand,
    And covers me there with His hand.
2
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
  He taketh my burden away;
He holdeth me up and I shall not be moved,
  He giveth me strength as my day.
3
With numberless blessings each moment He crowns,
  And, filled with His fulness divine,
I sing in my rapture, oh, glory to God,
  For such a Redeemer as mine!
4
When clothed in His brightness, transported I rise
  To meet Him in clouds of the sky,
His perfect salvation, His wonderful love,
  I’ll shout with the millions on high.

I love this hymn very much, both its words and its tune. It touches a chord in my soul that, like electricity, connects me to that wonderful world beyond and fills me with a refreshing sense of the kingdom to which I truly belong. O, how wonderful is our Savior and Lord! It is truly amazing that the song was written by this wonderful woman so long ago in Connecticut, USA and I, living in Borneo, learnt it from a YouTube video by the Bessy Choir from North East India! How wonderful is our Savior!

This song makes me to remember the time I was involved in a road accident which claimed many lives. By the grace of God I survived.

Since that day, I am serving God through the NGO, The William Stewart Hope for the Hopeless Foundation - Malawi. He really hideth our souls.

God bless you all as you serve God in different ways!

Fanny Crosby has written more hymns and supplied our church hymnal with more favorites than any other writer. At least 8,000 gospel texts flowed from the soul of this Godly woman. The story of Fanny's life as she triumphed over the handicap of blindness is most inspiring:

"I was born of humble parents at Southeast, New York. I was blinded for life through improper medical treatment when I was only 6 weeks of age. But I never considered blindness a handicap - rather a blessing and always insisted that blind people can accomplish almost anything that sighted persons can. I lived a normal, happy childhood. People often marveled that I could climb a tree like a squirrel and even ride a horse bareback. I began composing poetry when just a mere child. In fact, I recall writing these lines when I was only 8 years of age:

Oh, what a happy soul am I;

although I cannot see,

I am resolved that in this world

contented I will be.

How many blessings I enjoy

that other people don't;

to weep and sigh because I'm blind,

I cannot, and I won't."

Fanny continued writing poems, but they were always of a secular nature.

"Once I wrote the text for a very popular song titled 'Rosalie, the Prairie Flower.' I can still recall the thrill of receiving a check for $3,000 for this little work."

But one day William Bradbury, a friend who was well known as a gospel musician, confronted her with the challenge - "Fanny, don't you think it's time that you begin writing texts about the Lord - the One you profess to love so well?"

"These words by William Bradbury began to bother me greatly. I had been a Christian for many years and a faithful member of the St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church of New York City. But I was already well into my 40's, and the thought of writing religious verse seemed quite frightening. Yet, you know, spiritual thoughts and words began to flow freely from my heart and soon I was the happiest creature in all the land. Our home became a virtual beehive of activity as my many musician and pastor friends were always dropping in on me and requesting a new text for some special occasion. I can recall the day William Kirkpatrick stopped to see me in our New York home. He and I had worked together on numerous songs in the past."

William said, "Fanny, I've just finished composing a new tune that I thought would make a singable hymn. Now I need some words that would make this tune communicate the idea of confidence - the confidence we can have in God as we place our complete trust in Him."

As William played the tune on the piano, Fanny closed her eyes in prayer as she grasped her Bible. Then her face lit up as the words of this hymn began to flow from her heart.

Fanny Jane Crosby lived to be 95 years of age. In her later years, she was in much demand as a speaker and lecturer throughout the entire country. She usually traveled alone for these engagements and was often introduced with such titles as "the Protestant Saint" and "the most wonderful person living." It was her continual prayer that God would allow her to be used in leading to Christ every individual she contacted. Only eternity will disclose the host of people who have been won to a saving faith in her Lord or the number of lives that have been spiritually enriched through her many hymns.

Engraved on Fanny Crosby's tombstone at Bridgeport, Connecticut, are these significant words taken from our Lord's remarks to Mary after she had anointed Him with costly perfume - SHE HATH DONE WHAT SHE COULD (Mark 14:8). - '52 Hymn Stories Dramatized' by Kenneth W. Osbeck

Indeed He hides me and my family in the cleft of the rock and cover us there with His Hands. What a wonderful Redeemer You are.
