About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

How much can we do for our Savior

Service By the Lord Within

English906
1
How much can we do for our Savior?
How much for our dear fellow man?
The way to do more than we’re able
Is Jesus within to enable;
Thus we can do more than we can.
2
How much can we be for our Savior
In life with its brief, fleeting span?
If Jesus within us is dwelling
Our life and our actions infilling,
We all can do more than we can.
3
How much can we bear for our Savior?
How much for our dear fellow man?
If in us His love is constraining,
If ’neath us His arms are sustaining,
We all can do more than we can.
4
How much can we give for our Savior?
To succor our dear fellow man?
If from us His love is o’erflowing,
Our life will be ever outgoing;
We’ll always do more than we can.

Notice how the writer equates giving more or doing more for the Savior to serving his fellow man. He recognizes do this is beyond himself and requires the enabling of Jesus in His heart. By His life, in our spirit, we can do more than we are able to do.

To really serve God we need the overflow of life (love) to care for our fellow man. Remember the word does not say only love our brothers but that we must love our neighbor. (Matthew 22:39). This is a heart only the Lord can give us.

This delightful hymn reminds me of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:

Always rejoice, Unceasingly pray, In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

God doesn’t ask us to do big things for Him. He asks that we do all we can with what we have. Thank You, Lord Jesus! You are the indwelling Spirit!

I am just an unprofitable slave - Luke 17:10

i just do what I should do, even if it just a small things.

even if i'm not so capable, I just know that I love You.

but now I know the way to do more than we’re able:

Is Jesus within to enable, thus we can do more than we can. Amen

Thank you Lord, for this wonderful hymn
