In the tend’rest accents calling;

“Take thy cross, and daily follow me.”

The man that wrote this hymn, was not a recognized scholar or theologian, yet his work illustrates much experience of the Lord, especially his calling. The content of this hymn shows the Lord can work through many people, even all people. His story, what little is known of it, is below.

All hymns have a story. The story behind this hymn is usually told as follows: “Blandy, a Salvation Army officer, wrote this song after choosing between a comfortable post at an established church, and an alternate assignment to the New York City waterfront and slum called Hell’s Kitchen. He chose the latter. ”1 Although that story appears in many on-line and informal accounts, it is conspicuously absent from most scholarly works. So much about this hymn and the author of the text still remains a mystery.

Praise the Lord for the inspired words in this hymn. I can only aspire to many things in the hymn. I’m sure the author experienced the cross in many things. Yet in here 6 he aspired to be faithful and live his whole life like that. This is a deep hymn.
