God be with you till we meet again

1
God be with you till we meet again;
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep in love enfold you;
God be with you till we meet again.
  Till we meet, till we meet,
Till we meet at Jesus’ feet;
Till we meet, till we meet,
  God be with you till we meet again.
2
God be with you till we meet again!
’Neath His wings protecting hide you,
Daily manna still provide you;
God be with you till we meet again!
3
God be with you till we meet again!
When life’s perils thick confound you,
Put His arms unfailing round you;
God be with you till we meet again!
4
God be with you till we meet again!
Keep love’s banner floating o’er you,
Smite death’s threatening wave before you;
God be with you till we meet again!

I sing thing song over and over during my duty in East Timor and I feel so trembled by the meaning on how Lord Jesus will protect me. Blessed His Holy name.

"It was written as a Christian good-bye, and first sung in the First Congregational Church, of which I was minister for fifteen years. We had Gospel meetings on Sunday nights, and our music was intentionally of the popular kind. I wrote the first stanza, and sent it to two gentlemen for music. The music which seemed to me to best suit the words was written by T. G. Tomer, teacher of public schools in New Jersey, at one time on the staff of General 0. 0. Howard. After receiving the music (which was revised by Dr. J. W. Bischoff, the organist of my church), I wrote the other stanzas." - Jeremiah Eames Rankin in 'Dictionary of Hymnology' by Julian.

-------------

Stanza 4 above was printed on postcards to soldiers.

----------------

There are 4 additional stanzas which are usually omitted:

2b. God be with you till we meet again;

With the oil of joy anoint you;

Sacred ministries appoint you;

God be with you till we meet again.

------------

3b. God be with you till we meet again;

Of His promises remind you;

For life’s upper garner bind you;

God be with you till we meet again.

-------------

3c. God be with you till we meet again;

Sicknesses and sorrows taking,

Never leaving or forsaking;

God be with you till we meet again.

--------------

5. God be with you till we meet again;

Ended when for you earth’s story,

Israel’s chariot sweep to glory;

God be with you till we meet again.

Beautiful hymn, so inspiring; surely enjoyed the service in Leeds UK today....

To Mary from Hamilton, Ontario—my mother always tagged it with 494, according to her Irish father's hymn book from Belfast. She loved to hear him, a great tenor, sing it back in "the day" (she'll be 100 next week!)

Good day!

I so love this song. At my church growing up it was filled with military families.The last service before they deployed we would sing this song. It was 8 years before they were playing it for my family. Thank you Rockville Bethal Bible Church and Paster Raube for all the wonderful memories and the firm foundation you helped build in my life.

What a beautiful hymn for funerals. Indeed we shall meet again at the feet of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Even if we do not understand the Holy Bible but put our hope and trust in Him it is Gods promise that we shall meet again.

For Mary from Canada - it's number 65 or 66, there's two. Sorry but you might recognise the music.

During WW2 my family always added the hymn number for this hymn "God be with you till we meet again". Can you tell me what this number is, or where I might find this info?

Thank you.

This song gives hope to me that I will see my parents again. Faith, friends, is important. This is my faith to God, the Lord. Yes, my Jesus Christ. See again! Yes see again! Amen.
