On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff’ring and shame, And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above, To bear it to dark Calvary.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.

I love this hymn. I am a beginner in learning to play the piano and have chosen this song and will commit the lyrics to my heart as I play. So much comfort and peace. My grandmother and mother sang this song when I was a child. I am 70 and thankful to God for The Old Rugged Cross.
This has always been one of my favorite hymns. Good memories of singing it with my mom and our family. It's so comforting. The words and the music.
