Am I a soldier of the Cross

Consecration Fighting with the Lord

English468
1
Am I a soldier of the Cross—
A follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His name?

In the name, the precious name,
Of Him who died for me,
Through grace I’ll win the promised crown,
Whate’er my cross may be.
2
Must I be carried to the skies
On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize
And sailed through bloody seas?
3
Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?
4
Since I must fight if I would reign,
Increase my courage, Lord!
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy Word.

" Must I be carried to the skies, on earth flowery beds of ease, while my brother fight for Messiah's prize & sail through bloody seas.

Since I must fight if I would reign, increase my courage Lord! I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, supported by Thy Word. "

"Through grace I’ll win the promised crown,

Whate’er my cross may be"

That's the truth of my life. Through grace I'll reach that glorious place. Although my weakness, He will provide...

Glory to the Lamb Who made it possible....

In the early 18th century, when Isaac Watts was preaching in England, he frequently would write a hymn to illustrate his sermon. After preaching the sermon, he (or a clerk in the church) would teach the congregation the hymn.

One Sunday in 1727, Watts was preaching a sermon entitled, "Holy Fortitude, or Remedies against Fear." The text was 1 Corinthians 16:13, "Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith." At that time many Nonconformist believers were imprisoned for their views, even as Watts' own father had been. In his sermon, Watts urged his congregation to "practice unfashionable virtues, plead the cause of the oppressed, be courageous before infidels and scoffers." Then, as he closed the sermon, he began the hymn, "Am I a Soldier of the Cross?" - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

. . . was looking for a sub-title (Emmett Louis till / 1941 - 1955 / civil rights martyr / etc.) for this young man - we all suffered - along with his mother (and she opened that casket) so that they world could get a good look - at what was actually happening in the old south (lots of victims were never found) but this victim surfaced - after three days under water (to God be the glory) for the things he has done...

I was in Accra, Ghana for a young people's conference and training in 2002 and we sang this hymn over and over, it was almost like a theme song. What a wonderful time of fellowship and enjoyment of the Lord! I really enjoyed the spirit and genuineness of all the young people there. Praise the Lord!
