Consecration Serving the Lord

English463
1
I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free,
For He is my Redeemer;
He paid the price for me.
I would not leave His service,
It is so sweet and blest;
And in the weariest moments
He gives the truest rest.
2
My Master shed His life-blood
My vassal life to win,
And save me from the bondage
Of tyrant self and sin.
He chose me for His service,
And gave me power to choose
That blessed, perfect freedom,
Which I shall never lose.
3
I would not halve my service,
His only it must be!
His only, who so loved me,
And gave Himself for me.
Rejoicing and adoring,
Henceforth my song shall be,
I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free.

I. THE MOTIVE OF SERVING THE LORD

1) “I love my master... I will not go out free”( Exo. 21:5 ).

A saved person wishes to serve the Lord, not out of others’ encouragement or compelling, but out of an inward motive. This motive is his love for the Lord. His love for the Lord constrains him and impels him to serve the Lord. The verse here describes a slave in the Old Testament who, due to his love for his master, would not go out free at the end of his days of slavery; he would rather be a slave to serve his beloved master. This typifies the New Testament believer who should love the Lord and serve Him in the same manner.

2) “I beg you therefore... through the compassions of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice... which is your most reasonable service”( Rom. 12:1 ).

Here the Apostle Paul begs us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to serve God. His begging us is through the compassions of God, proving that God’s compassions, which are out of God’s love, should be our motive in serving God, stirring us up to love God and to serve Him.

LOVE AS THE BASIS FOR SERVICE

According to 21:2 , a Hebrew slave was to be set free after serving his master six years. If he obtained a wife and children during his years as a slave, he was to leave them as the property of his master and “go out by himself” ( v. 4 ). However, the slave might “plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free” ( v. 5 ). Here we see that continuing as a slave is not a legal requirement; it is a matter of love. Because the slave loved his master, his wife, and his children, he did not want to go out free. Instead, he would serve his master forever. Love is the basis of his continued service.

It is often said that love blinds people. In a very real sense, if we would love others, we should be blind toward them. Concerning ourselves, however, we must be a sacrifice. Love requires sacrifice. Without sacrifice, there can be no love. The Lord Jesus loved us by being a sacrifice for us. Ephesians 5:2 says, “Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor. ” Christ gave Himself for us, dying a malefactor’s death on the cross. This proves that love demands sacrifice.

If a brother is not willing to sacrifice himself, he cannot love his wife. Likewise, parents must be willing to sacrifice for their children if they are to love their children. There is no love without sacrifice.

According to 21:5 , it was possible that a slave might not want to be free. Out of love for his master, wife, and children, he might prefer to remain under bondage as a slave. This is not a matter of legal requirement; it is motivated by voluntary love.

The Lord Jesus loves God, the church, and all His people. God is His Master, the church is His wife, and all His people are His children. The New Testament reveals this threefold love of the Lord Jesus for the Father, the church, and the saints. According to John 14:31 , the Lord loves the Father; according to Ephesians 5:25 , Christ loves the church; and according to Galatians 2:20 and Ephesians 5:2 , Christ loves all the believers, all the saints. Motivated by such a love, He was willing to be a slave. Love is the motive and the prerequisite of being a slave.

The sister that penned this hymn only lived to be 43. Yet she wrote so many sweet intimate hymns of her experience like this one. I wonder how many have experienced the Lord as master like this. She is certainly a willing to be a slave and servant. But she sees she is free in this service no longer in bondage from sin. She also realizes that she does this by choice. She writes in another of her hymns about being a loving slave to her master that loves her. The first verse of another of her hymns is below.

Master, how shall I bless Thy name
For love so great to me,
For sweet enablings of Thy grace,
So sov’reign, yet so free,
That taught me to obey Thy word,
And cast my care on Thee?

A vassal:

a person who was given part of a Lord's land and who pledged himself to that Lord

a person under the protection of a feudal Lord to whom he has vowed homage (respect) and fealty (loyalty, fidelity, pledge).

In other words in return for our giving ourselves to Him we receive a land and not only a land but a share of the throne.

Crystallization-study of Exodus. God wants those that will serve Him in spirit. Whose purpose are we serving?

Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve Him in sincerity and faithfulness, and put away the Gods whom your fathers served across the River and in Egypt and serve Jehovah.

Our destiny is to hold a feast unto God! Let us enjoy God!
