O for a thousand tongues to sing

Praise of the Lord His Grace

English163
1
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace.
2
My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of Thy name.
3
Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.
4
His love my heart has captive made,
His captive would I be,
For He was bound, and scourged and died,
My captive soul to free.
5
He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.
6
So now Thy blessed Name I love,
Thy will would e’er be mine.
Had I a thousand hearts to give,
My Lord, they all were Thine!

I’ve must have sung this hymn a thousand times. I just noticed the progression from a thousand tongues to a thousand hearts. We start by confessing with our lips and then praising Him. Eventually He really gains our heart and we ask for a thousand hearts to love Him. That is true gain and a marvelous inspiration.

I cry when listening to or singing this hymn. Those words reach deep into the heart. It's the Holy Spirit showing us the great love of our Redeemer and King, Jesus Christ who is coming soon.

The Holy Spirit just reminded me of this hymn to gladden my heart.

Had I a thousand heart to give
My Lord they all were thine.
Glory be to God.

Behold my Lord and Saviour!
He came to set the captive free,
He came to release the prisoner,

He came to loose my tongue, correct my sight and give me a listening hear.

I'll forever praise His Holy name.

He breaks the power of forgiven sins. He sets the prisoner free!

Jesus! The triumphs of your grace. Can I trust your process?
Can I come?
Can I receive your grace so that I can know true freedom?
What love you have for me,
O Captain of my Salvation,
Captain of Suffering,
my Deliverer and my God!
