One sat alone beside the highway begging, His eyes were blind, the light he could not see; He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows, Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.

“Unclean! unclean!” the leper cried in torment, The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near; The fever raged, disease had gripped its victim, Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.

So men today have found the Savior able, They could not conquer passion, lust and sin; Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely, Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

This is one of my favorite testamony songs I still like to sing it. I heard Bro Rolloff sing it in the early 80's. Thanks for giving me the words I did not have vs. 4.
In 1957 I use to sing this hymn round the piano in our lounge in Bara - Sigatoka, Fiji Islands. As there were no electric lights in those days we used the Tiley kerosene lantern which sat on the piano. Our fox terrier dog - Bits - loved the song and she would howl everything she heard the hymn being played and sung.
Having recently retired I have struggled with many things and my options. As I was working in the house the Lord brought this song to my remembrance. I could only remember part of the chorus and looked it up. I sang this as a small girl, loved it then and still do. Sure ministers to me. Thank you for being here. May God continue to bless you and give you favor....
Hmm...this is one of my favorite classic hymns and I just can't get tired of listening to those wonderful words tell of the power of Jesus as He comes and breaks the power of the Devil and take all pains away. I simply love this hymn.
Amazing love of God is manifested in our Savior who loves us dearly as his own brothers and sisters. I can't think of Him without crying for what He has done on the cross.
The first time I heard this song was in the early 1950's when I was in the third grade one of my friends used to sing it and I never forget it. The title as I knew it from an old hymnal is When Jesus came. I guess in so ways we are all beggars and sometimes are blind.
I learned this hymn as a child and never forgot the first stanza. As I laid in bed one night some of the hurtful memories of my youth returned. I then had a dream. I was a beggar, sad, discouraged, and hopeless. Then, in my dream, Jesus came. He walked over to me, embraced me and my heart was filled with joy.
