What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

In our case we can say
Do Thy family despise forsake Thee.
But through it all He has taken wrapped us in His loving arms, shielded us and given us solace, support and above all His undeserved Love.

This is such a great reminder of how we need to view God. After all, we were originally made for walking with Him in the garden; and now because of what Jesus has done on the cross we are brought near once more. Not only is He the closest, dearest, and most faithful friend but also He has made us even as He is: a new creation. Everything good or noteworthy in my life is either because of the work He has done or is doing. I used to think that I could be good on my own, but now when I see anything good in myself I know it is Him working in me.

I love this song as I sing I know from my heart, I have a special and best friend around me day by day, hour by hour and every second of a minute. He sees and hears my troubles. I have to be careful what I say and do.

I simply love this song, especially the last stanza.

I absolutely love this hymn, and sing it often during my morning devotions with the Lord. When I personalize it, by replacing words like we, our, and such; with I and my...it becomes a prayer that I sing to the Lord and it stirs my heart every time! Praise God for His Faithfulness!

I woke up one morning recently and this hymn came to my mind, I had not heard this hymn for many years but as I sang through this hymn sitting here at my computer, the words 'Can we find a friend so faithful' made me cry because of my experience over the last three years of realising that people who I thought were friends turned out not to be, and the words in the third verse 'Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?' I did not realise these words were in this hymn. I believe God was saying that He knows what I have suffered and understands the pain that I have been through. This is a lovely hymn.

This song gives me comfort and peace! Great reminder to take everything to Him in prayer! He is always there to listen.

This is actually a letter written from the writer to his mother that was used as a hymn. (Joseph Scriven). Go to YouTube and watch the story of him. This was a man of faith toward God and trusted so much. The story is heart felt and great history of the writing.
