a person who was given part of a Lord's land and who pledged himself to that Lord
a person under the protection of a feudal Lord to whom he has vowed homage (respect) and fealty (loyalty, fidelity, pledge).
In other words in return for our giving ourselves to Him we receive a land and not only a land but a share of the throne.
