Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the face of God;
He, to save my soul from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the face of God;
He, to save my soul from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee.
Teach me, Lord, some rapturous measure,
Meet for me Thy grace to prove,
While I sing the countless treasure
Of my God’s unchanging love.
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee.
Teach me, Lord, some rapturous measure,
Meet for me Thy grace to prove,
While I sing the countless treasure
Of my God’s unchanging love.

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love:
Take my heart, oh, take and seal it
With Thy Spirit from above.
Rescued thus from sin and danger,
Purchased by the Savior’s blood,
May I walk on earth a stranger,
As a son and heir of God.
Prone to leave the God I love:
Take my heart, oh, take and seal it
With Thy Spirit from above.
Rescued thus from sin and danger,
Purchased by the Savior’s blood,
May I walk on earth a stranger,
As a son and heir of God.

I've sang this song many times in church and it never touched me the way it did this morning when I heard Dr David Jeremiah tell the story about the author. He was so in love with the Lord but he just kept going his own sinful way until one day he decided God couldn't love or use him anymore, he had messed everything up so bad. So the story goes, he decided to try and run from God. He decided to travel. He was on a stage coach with a lady that was so in love with the Lord. She was reading something and suddenly she said to him " listen to the words of this beautiful hymn, it's so touching " and she started reading "prone to wander, oh Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love". He started crying and she thought he was just touched by the words, not knowingthathe was the author of the song. Isn't it just like our precious Savior to put him in that place at that time to let him know He still loved him and wanted him to repent and follow Him. Thank you Jesus, what a friend we have in you!

Wow! What real words. Oh, to grace that keeps us in Christ. The spirit of the writer is ever so touchable. It reminds us of how far this grace has brought us, and how the "streams of mercy " have never ceased, despite how our feeling may have ceased; our zeal and our burning love for the Lord, the streams are still flowing.

Oh to Grace, how great a debtor. When I sang this, I look back over my life and see it is truly His grace that got me through. This Grace is Christ coming to us as our very life and enjoyment. He takes us through the difficult times. It is by this that we can choose to follow him. I was blessed to know Christ as grace at a very young age, even before I understood it. It was Grace that put me in a Christian home and a wonderful church. As I grew older in high school and collage, it was Christ that constrained me and kept me away from so many damaging things. Now it is still Him that makes me willing to suffer loss to pursue Him. I’m truly in debt to this Grace.

Haven’t sung this hymn for a long time but always resonated with the lines, “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love”. Was reminded of these words as I’m working on a message from Romans 7 where our super hero of the faith, the Apostle Paul gets real and talks about his own tendency to do what he doesn’t want to do and not do the things he ought. The pull of sin is strong even for the redeemed and so we are admonished often in scripture to guard our hearts and minds so as to align our affections, our thoughts, and behaviors with Christ. So, so grateful for the Holy Spirit to help us and God’s amazing grace as we stumble along.

A classic favorite of mine. Prone to wander, but God Himself draws me back to Him, time and time again. He is the Source of all blessings and graces and mercy. Without Christ and His enveloping canopy of tender love and sustenance, no one can survive in this cruel world.

Apparently there were two Robert Robinsons living at the same time in England in the 1700s. Both were dissenters from the Anglican Church. It seems a little unclear about who wrote this hymn and if the story is even true. (Hopefully one of my more knowledgeable ancient-hymn writer friends can clarify this mystery. ) At any rate, what struck me this morning was the phrase, “tune my heart to sing Thy praise. ” It hit me that as followers of the Lord, we sometimes get off track or down in the dumps and that it may be because we get “out of tune“ with God. So it’s very appropriate for us to ask Him to put our hearts and lives back “in tune” with him!

Once we were not a people, now we are. Once we had not received Mercy , now we have. Bless God for the gift of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, He has transferred us from the Kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of His dear Son
