I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me

1
I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
  He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Apple-tree of trees, in Him alone I see
  All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay,
  He tells me every care on Him to roll:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and Morning Star,
  He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
2
He all my griefs has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
  In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I’ve all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
  From my heart, and now He keeps me by His power.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
  Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and Morning Star,
  He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
3
He’ll never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
  While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
  With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessed face,
  Where rivers of delight shall ever roll:
He’s the Apple-tree of trees, the Bright and Morning Star,
  He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

Reposting this comment for those curious. This was commented by Steve Miller in March 2020:

The original title of this song is "The Lily of the Valley".

In Song of Songs, the Lord's lover is "The Lily of the Valley", and her Lord is "the apple tree among the trees".

The hymnal.net version replaces "the lily of the valley" with "the apple tree of trees" because the song is applying that metaphor to the Lord.

Therefore I think the hymnal. net version is a worthy improvement over the original.

Song of Solomon 2:1 I am a rose of Sharon, A lily of the valleys.

2 As the lily among thorns, So is my love among the daughters.

3 As the apple-tree among the trees of the wood, So is my beloved among the sons: In his shadow have I rapture and sit down; And his fruit is sweet to my taste.

Another way to align this song with Scripture, and still keep the author's tender feeling about the Lord would be to replace "the lily of the valley" with "His lips tender as lilies" based on:

Song of Songs 5:13 His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: *his lips like lilies*, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.

This my best song. Jesus is everything to me, my best friend, confidant, my hope I look up to. When I think of Him of whom He is I get strength to move on because all my hope is not lost.

I hope to see Him face to face someday. This is my wish to be with Him at the end.
