If I gained the world, but lost the Savior

1
If I gained the world, but lost the Savior,
Were my life worth living for a day?
Could my yearning heart find rest and comfort
In the things that soon must pass away?
If I gained the world, but lost the Savior,
Would my gain be worth the lifelong strife?
Are all earthly pleasures worth comparing
For a moment with a Christ-filled life?
2
Had I wealth and love in fullest measure,
And a name revered both far and near,
Yet no hope beyond, no harbor waiting,
Where my storm-tossed vessel I could steer;
If I gained the world, but lost the Savior,
Who endured the cross and died for me,
Could then all the world afford a refuge,
Whither, in my anguish, I might flee?
3
O what emptiness!—without the Savior
’Mid the sins and sorrows here below!
And eternity, how dark without Him!
Only night and tears and endless woe!
What, though I might live without the Savior,
When I come to die, how would it be?
O to face the valley’s gloom without Him!
And without Him all eternity!
4
O the joy of having all in Jesus!
What a balm the broken heart to heal!
Ne’er a sin so great, but He’ll forgive it,
Nor a sorrow that He does not feel!
If I have but Jesus, only Jesus,
Nothing else in all the world beside—
O then everything is mine in Jesus;
For my needs and more He will provide.

This hymn reminds me of the book of Ecclesiastes by King Solomon. Both the hymn and the book reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun and all is a chasing of the wind (Eccl. 1:9, 14). But verse four is wonderful! We have Jesus and this is far better than gaining all in the world. Lord, pray that in my whole lifetime You will remind me that all I need is Jesus! All we need is a Christ-filled life!

without Jesus, the life is only vanity, filled with darkness, night and tears. but when we have Jesus, we have all things. the Lord is such a balm to heal all the wounds in our being. He is such a refuge we can run to anytime. what profits us if we gain the whole wolrd, but lose the Savior?

I am used to a wide variety of sacred music.. can you some historical sacred songs and nonverbal worship music?

I was raised Pentecostal, joined Christian&missionary church(evangelical). Married conservative baptist.. spent years on the mission field.. know independent baptists, and now belong to a southern baptist fellowship.. we have attended moravian church holiday services for many years.. and know some very wonderful presbyterian worship hymns… since we have friends there.. all conservative.. biblical …

I will listen a bit but will go elsewhere…

Mingling is the way???

I truly love the simple message of this hymn. So much so that I share it with our church membership as a solo.

Lord, continue to remind me each day that everything in this world is temporary, but You are for eternity. Always keep me faithful to You, always help me choose You over the world because without You, life is meaningless. O Lord, always preserve me for You and You only!
