There is a green hill far away

1
There is a green hill far away,
  Without a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
  Who died to save us all.
  Oh, dearly, dearly has He loved,
  And died our sins to bear;
We trust in His redeeming blood,
    And life eternal share.
2
We may not know, we cannot tell,
  What pains He had to bear;
But we believe it was for us
  He hung and suffered there.
3
He died that we might be forgiven,
  He died to make us good,
That we might from our sins be freed,
  Saved by His precious blood.
4
There was no other good enough
  To pay the price of sin,
He only could divine life give
  And dwell Himself within.

I learnt this song in Lower Primary School when the Reverend would come to our school on Fridays mid morning. We would assemble and he would sing it before preaching the word of God. It moved me then but more when I surrendered my life to Jesus when I was in High School. Tears flooded my eyes. It has a deeper meaning to me. How could the innocent die for the guilty because of love? How could love kill so violently? My human mind cannot comprehend it. Thank You Jesus for redeeming my soul.

When I was 5 years old, my three sisters joined the British Sandford Scool as boarders. The St. Matthews Anglican Church was few minute walk where we went every Sunday. Around Christmas and Easter all the hymns appropriate for that time was sung at Church as well in the evenings around the piano ad the headmistress, Mrs. Sandford played, while we children sung around her before going to bed. My memories of "There is a green far away" and many others ate from that time on. I am 71 years old now! I went later to boarding Christian School in England and where these old hymns were sung by us girls.

God popped this into my head this morning - I found myself in floods of tears imagining the pain and suffering Jesus when through to bring reconciliation and forgiveness with and from God.

Thank You God that You sent Jesus and Thank You Jesus that You came. Be with us all Holy Spirit to strengthen us today.

As a school director, I enjoy this hymn each time, during the morning or afternoon assembly, it is sang. It has a lot of messages in it. Indeed, it makes me go sober.

This hymn so reminds me of my dear mum. So many happy memories of her singing it in the kitchen. Thank you for giving me all the words.
