Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Am blessed singing this song today, as I felt renewed knowing once again God is perfect in Power, Love and Purity. Jesus is everything the world would regret not having after it has all been said and done. Beloved let's put on our gospel shoes and save the world from this regret. I Love Jesus.
This hymn is sung to God in worship, and is taken both from Revelation (where the four and twenty elders cast their crowns before the throne of the Lamb of God, slain before the foundation of the world, AND Isaiah 6 where the 6 angels praised God.
In Isaiah 6 the saved sinner Isaiah was convicted of sin by the holiness of God. He had to hide parts of his body from the effects of the holiness of God, whilst the unfallen Angels need not hide any part of their beings as they are sinless .
The gospel is that The Lord Jesus was slain in our place, bearing our sins on the cross and was resurrected from the dead. If people repent and believe the gospel, they shall be born again, and only then shall they be able to sing this hymn in spirit and in truth (John 4).
One other hymn comes to mind at this point 'eternal light, eternal light how pure the soul must be.
This song is featured in the Andy Griffith movie,”Angel in my pocket”. I watch that movie many times with my daughter. We happened to catch Andy on another rerun and my daughter said,”howy, howy mom!” I said ,”yes! you smarty girl.”
Reginald Heber was always trying to improve the music at the Anglican church he served in Hodnet, England. Though his superiors frowned on the use of anything but metrical psalms, Heber introduced hymns by Newton and Cowper and even wrote new hymns of his own. This one would impress Alfred, Lord Tennyson as the world's greatest hymn.
After serving 16 years as a parish priest in England, Heber accepted the call to become bishop of Calcutta, India.
The tune to which this hymn is sung is called "Nicaea", named after the church council that met in A.D. 325, which formulated the Nicene Creed and affirmed the doctrine of the Trinity. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton
