                            And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

                            ’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love Divine!
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.

                            He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.

                            Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
                                                              Long my imprisoned spirit lay

                            No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
                                                              No condemnation now I dread;

I never knew the hymn had 2 extra verses. It has become one of my favorites. When it is sung I actually get chills.

I sang this song many times in my youth. I love the buoyant tune. Now I slow down and read these hymns and appreciate the inspiration and experience the author had. Look how many question marks are in the first verse. Yes when I sing it I also say “How could it be? ” We know the quick answer is He loved us and was willing to die for us. Even the angels can’t understand this great love. This love first came to us through Christ. He is the mystery of God. This mystery became manefested and known to man only in the last 2, 000 years and it recorded in the gospel. If we have any grasp of His great love, it is through the gospel. It is in this Christ that we can now approach the throne of God. I must admit that I don’t understand that, but through faith, I can experience it. Lord I don’t want you to be a mystery to me. Make yourself known more and more through your word! We will never have all our questions answered until we see you face to face.

Lord, thank You for redeeming us not with gold or silver but with precious blood as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot, the blood of Christ! How we praise Him for purchasing the church through His own blood! What a precious blood! How precious we are in the Lord’s eyes, for Him to shed His own blood for the church! Praise the Lord 😀

I am studying for my Hymnology class and enjoying singing this over and over. What great joy Jesus Christ has given me in assurance of my salvation. Undeserved and oh so appreciated.
