About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

GOD’S LOVE, GRACE, AND MERCY

Why is salvation of Jehovah? Why is God interested in man? In a general way, we can say that it is because God is love. But more specifically, it is because God loves man. If God did not love man, He would not need to save him. Salvation is accomplished because, on the one hand, man has sinned and, on the other hand, God has loved. If man had not sinned, there would be no place and no way for the love of God to be manifested. And if man had sinned but God had not loved, nothing would have been achieved either. Salvation is accomplished and the gospel is preached because on the one hand God has loved and on the other hand man has sinned.

GOD’S LOVE

The Bible never fails to point out the love of God. In our Bible study this time, we will cover the truth of the gospel only in a sketchy way. We will mention a lot of things, but will not consider them in detail. Tonight I cannot cover every aspect concerning the love of God found in the Bible. I can mention this matter only briefly. We must consider three aspects of the love of God. First, God is love. Second, God loves man. And third, the expression of God’s love is in the death of Christ.

God Is Love

Let us come to the first point: God is love. This is recorded in 1 John 4:16 . Here it does not say that God loves. Nor does it say that God may love, or that God can love, or that God has loved or will love. Rather, it says that God is love. What does it mean to say that God is love? It means that God Himself, His nature and His being, is love. If we can say that God has a substance, then God’s substance is love.

Howard Kingsbury was born on February 3, 1842, New York and died on September 28, 1878, Amherst, Massachusetts. He is buried in the Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum, Manhattan, New York.

Howard was is the son of Oliver Richmond Kingsbury and Susana Patterson, and husband of Sofi Howard Thayer ( married 1869). He graduated from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1863. He served as pastor of the second Presbyterian Church, Newark, Ohio, and later at the Village Church in Amherst, Massachusetts (December 1877).

1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son as a propitiation for our sins.

We love our Abba Father because He has loved us first. It is not that we have loved Him. Out from His great love, He has sent His Son for the propitiation of our sins. Oh what compassion this is! And what assurance that God has indeed loved us and gave His Son to be our Redeemer!
