The Church’s one foundation

The Church Her Foundation

English833
1
The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is His new creation
By water and the Word:
From heav’n He came and sought her
To be His holy Bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
And for her life He died.
2
Elect from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation,
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.
3
’Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace for evermore;
Till, with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.
4
Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly,
In love may dwell with Thee.

Lord, give us grace to keep us coming to You that we may take Your yoke, and learn from You to be infused with Your meekness and gentleness that we may inherit the earth in the coming Kingdom of God! Lord, keep us coming to You to be meek and lowly in heart ❤️ 🙏

This hymn is really inspiring, just returned from church and the spirit of God led me to this hymn. Thank you Lord for Jesus, one faith, one birth, my prayer is that after this race here on Earth we will also rejoice and sing in heaven

Being a musician and having played piano in church since a teenager (by ear, no training), I tend to have a song in my mind just about every waking moment. It's a mixed blessing. I, too, remember this from my childhood and remembered a lot of the words. But this song has been #1 on my Playlist for years off and on I think, in large part, because I love the simple melody. I decided to Google the words and am so blessed by every verse. It speaks of the birth, and life of true believers who make up the body of Christ-- from it's beginning until we are at rest.

Thank you. I hadn't the lyrics but the holy tune filled my heart this morning. I hummed and found it via Google.

To the glory of God, I have been a Christian all my life (with my granddad being an Anglican priest while he was here); the Church of Christ will live on and the gates of hell SHALL NEVER prevail against it.

This hymn was written in sorrow over one of many divisions in the church. The writer had some vision of the preciousness of the one expression of the church. This is one of the writer’s hymns that stood the test of time. So there must be some left who really know how much God cares for the oneness of the body. After all it is His expression.

This a is a great hymn about the church and the oneness of the body. It was written in 1864. I’m sure it was written because the writer longed for the unity of the church. See verse four. It was written after there was a great division in the church of England. The last verse also speaks of the meek and lowly. There are not many leaders like this. Remember the meek and lowly, like Christ, will inherit the earth.

The Hymn just dropped in my heart, although I grew up knowing this hymn in church, but today I take note of its profound words and meaning! Oh Lord... what deep love you have for us, we can never comprehend but only imagine.
