Rivers of living water

Fullness of the Spirit As the Living Water

English251
1
Rivers of living water,
Rivers that flow from the throne,
Rivers o’erflowing with blessing,
Coming from Jesus alone.

Rivers of living water,
Rivers of life so free,
Flowing from Thee, my Savior,
Send now the rivers through me.
2
Whoso is thirsty come hither,
Here is abundant supply;
Water transparent as crystal,
Come without money and buy.
3
Cleanse me, oh, cleanse me, my Savior,
Make me a channel today;
Empty me, fill me and use me,
Teach me to trust and obey.
4
Then, and then only, Lord Jesus,
Through me the rivers can flow;
Thus and thus only will others
Learn Thy great fullness to know.
5
Now I surrender to Jesus,
Here I lay all at His feet;
Anything, anywhere only,
Just for His service made meet!

C. The Flow of Rivers of Living Water

The Lord Jesus said, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water” ( 7:38 ). In 4:14 the Lord said that whoever drinks of the water that He gives us will have in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life. In chapter seven the Lord goes somewhat further, saying that anyone who drinks of Him will have the flow of the rivers of water of life. The Lord did not speak of just one flow but of rivers. The unique river of living water is the Holy Spirit. Out of this unique river, many rivers will flow out. These “rivers of living water” are the many flows of the different aspects of life (cf. Rom. 15:30 ; 1 Thes. 1:6 ; 2 Thes. 2:13 ; Gal. 5:22-23 ) of the one unique “river of water of life” ( Rev. 22:1 ), which is God’s “Spirit of life” ( Rom. 8:2 ). One river is the river of peace, and other rivers are joy, comfort, righteousness, life, holiness, love, patience, and humility. I do not know how many rivers there are. These rivers of living water flow out from the depths of our being. This is Christ as life. In the principle set forth in chapter two , this flowing of the rivers of living water is also the changing of death into life. Death is of the source of the tree of knowledge, and life is of the source of the tree of life.

What would happen if we came to a meeting and we all sat there without the flow of living water? It would surely be a dead meeting. If no one had anything to flow out, death would be prevailing. However, if everyone would flow with some rivers, eventually the meeting would be flooded over. It would be full of life. This is the changing of death into life.

Rivers of living water,
Rivers of life so free,

I just love the flow of this song as it relates to our experience. The Triune God as the consummated Spirit is flowing from the throne as the ONE RIVER (Rev 22:1). But he who drinks of this water, out from HIS (the drinker's) innermost being shall flow RIVERS of living water. (John 7:38-39)

Our experience of the Spirit of Life bears many fruits, many experiences of the Spirit in our various circumstances - the Spirit as love (Rom 15:30) the Spirit as joy (1 Thes 1:6), the Spirit as sanctification (2 Thes 2:13), and so on.

But what touched me the most is that as we flow these rivers to others, it becomes to them "waters to swim in, a river that could not be crossed"!! (Ezekiel 47:5) Hence, this hymn ends with stanza 5 - Now I surrender to him. Here I lay all at His feet.

Praise the Lord for the tide of love, the constraining river whose streams gladden the city of God and brings all of us under His authority in the most enjoyable way - BY DRINKING!! Let's keep drinking!!

1 John 1: 2 and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us— 3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ, Amen!

Now I surrender to Jesus
Here I lay all at His feet
Anything, anywhere only,
Just for His service made meet! Amen

I have just come across this beautiful hymn and would like to use it in worship... does anyone know where a full music script is available - I don't seem to be able to find it in any of our hymnbooks!
