One sat alone beside the highway begging

Gospel General

English1078
1
One sat alone beside the highway begging,
His eyes were blind, the light he could not see;
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows,
Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.

When Jesus comes the tempter’s pow’r is broken;
When Jesus comes the tears are wiped away.
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.
2
From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon pow’rs possessed him,
Then Jesus came and set the captive free.
3
“Unclean! unclean!” the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its victim,
Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.
4
Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
Then Jesus came and night was turned to day.
5
So men today have found the Savior able,
They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

The song is glorious and so soothing it is encouraging to a burdened heart. I sing this song most of the time I get spiritual meaning and uplift.

I thank the composer of this song. I thank Jesus for all He is executing in the life of humanity.

Grief is so heavy. My husband passed away of after battle with pancreatic cancer in July of 2025. My Dad used to sing this song; and God is bringing back music to my memory and this is so comforting. Thank you.

I love this song with all my heart I was looking for the words for more than 10 years now and have just found it this morning whilst searching for it again; in the past I was struggling to get it my searching for it always failed me. My late mother use to sing this song always and always, at home when I was a little boy during the fifties, sixties and early seventies and I remember it so clearly it moves my body soul and spirit so dearly 💖 it brings out beautifully "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding" ✝️🕎✡️🇮🇱🔥❤️🙏

I'm going to sing this song before I minister the Word at our Evangelistic Outreach Crusade this evening. God has put it in my heart over the past week. Thankful for the words of hope and salvation. To God be the glory 🙏

A wonderful and meaningful song. Sing this when visiting those who are going through a bad patch or are homebound. Decided to share this at a gathering of friends at a longhouse either tomorrow or day after.

My first memory of this song is of my Mother singing it in church when I was a little boy in the late 40's, early 50's. I have sung it in concert many times. I only had the words for 2 verses and knew it had more. I woke up this morning with the song on my mind and so looked up the song to get the words to the entire song. Will be singing all of it soon.
