Immanuel and a Sanctuary
Fourth, Jesus is Immanuel ( Isa. 7:14 ). The name Immanuel means “God with us. ” The Jews have God, but we Christians have Jesus as Immanuel—God with us. Fifth, as Immanuel, Jesus becomes a sanctuary to us ( 8:14a ). The sanctuary here refers to the inner temple, the Holy of Holies. Jesus as Immanuel becomes a sanctuary to God’s chosen people, the place where they as God’s priests live with God and worship and serve God ( John 1:14 ; 2:19 , 21 ; 14:23 ; 15:5 ; Rev. 21:22 ). As the inner part of the temple, the sanctuary was more solid than the tabernacle. The tabernacle was not fixed in one place but was constantly journeying. However, the sanctuary was solid and set in one place. Jesus is not only the tabernacle but also the sanctuary to us.
