This is one of my favourite songs in hymnals.
I could remember when I sang this song repeatedly till that night when I slept an Angel of God visited me in my dream and told me that that is His favourite songs and asked why was I singing it?
I told him my just loved the song and I felt like singing it.
Since then my life have not remained the same.

This beautiful song reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus did for us by giving His life so that we can have eternal life with Him. It awakens a need for repentance, service, re dedication and gratitude to my Saviour in me any time I listen to it.

This is a sentimental hymn, but the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ was far from sentimental. On the cross of Calvary, Jesus bore the sins of the world in agony, both from his bodily pain and wounds, and also from the spiritual pain of bearing the world's sins AND enduring separation from His Heavenly Father (My God , my God why hast thou forsaken me? - the sins parted God the Father from His Son, Jesus, as God is Holy and sin is abhorrent to Him).
To go to Heaven a person must be born again of God through repentance and God-given faith in the gospel.
