One sat alone beside the highway begging

1
One sat alone beside the highway begging,
  His eyes were blind, the light he could not see;
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows,
  Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.
  When Jesus comes the tempter’s pow’r is broken;
  When Jesus comes the tears are wiped away.
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,
    For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.
2
From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
  Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon pow’rs possessed him,
  Then Jesus came and set the captive free.
3
“Unclean! unclean!” the leper cried in torment,
  The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its victim,
  Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.
4
Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
  For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
  Then Jesus came and night was turned to day.
5
So men today have found the Savior able,
  They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
  Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

I sang this when I was 10. It's been more than 50 years now and the words still grip my heart like the 1st day. Praise the Lord for this hymn.

The first stanza of the above song described the bitter state of life of the blind man. Like the blind man, the solution to his blindness was oblivion unto him until Jesus Christ stepped into the arena of his life. Like the Water of Marah was turned into a sweet and drinkable water after Moses cast the tree into it, the gloom of your life will be taken away, and your life will be filled with glory when you allow Jesus Christ to have His way in your life as you embrace salvation.

In fact all must change when we open our hearts and give room for Jesus, when He has a permanent place in our thoughts, actions, lifestyle. He replaces the gloom of the world with heavenly glory incomprehensible.

I haven't heard this song for many years. As a child my parents used to sing this song in church. I was making breakfast and I found myself humming the song. I looked it up then called my sister in Jamaica, told her about it. And immediately she started to sing the song. She stopped and said to me, who do you remember? And I told her Papa, she said yes it was one of his favorite. This song gives me joy and hope. One day Jesus is coming back for us. Let us be faithful and ready to meet Him.

This whole points us to the fact that he can do it again and again!

Waking up with this song at heart mean a lot to me, reminding me of His power, hallelujah

Woke up two mornings now with this song singing in my heart. I didn't know it had so many verses. What a blessed truth! Jesus is indeed Lord over all situations. He can do anything!!! I love Him because He first loved me.

Thanks for posting the words.

Great to hear this hymn played and the words so clearly written. The song came into my head as I woke up and I was glad to find this version. Thanks

I’ve had this song in my heart and mind several days but unsure of the words. I’m playing it as a prelude tomorrow at church.
