A mighty Fortress is our God

Spiritual Warfare By God as Fortress

English886
1
A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
2
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
3
And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
4
That Word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

Yes, He is the mighty ruler over all the kings of the earth. He has won the victory over the Satan and has given us authority over him as well. We, his bride have much still to suffer but we will love and encourage each other to stand strong to the end. For we know his doom is sure! Christ will be victorious! And we with him if we hold fast his teachings. I am praying to repent of anywhere I have been deceived and also for my brothers and sisters. May we stay faithful to the end loved ones! He is bringing about the restoration of all things and He will dwell on earth here with us in his restored creation . And we will reign with Him! “Glory be to the One who loves us and who freed us from our sins by His blood and made us a kingdom and made us priests to his God and father. ” Rev. 1:5-6.

I am in the midst of a Bible study on the Armor of God. I have taken discipleship classes and in book 3 the armor is detailed and shown how we can fight and be on guard. But we know the battle is not ours to fight alone. Yesterday I came across another reference to the name for God: The Lord of Host… and as I pulled out my Names of God book, I refreshed myself with its meaning. This hymn was referenced for verse 2. So, here I am today singing it and worshiping God our Lord of Host, Lord Sabaoth. I remember as a child singing it and not understanding the reference. I praise God now that I am aware of His power, might, and strength and that He is our defender and guide. Thank you for this site, that helps us all connect to the hymns we grew up on. My church though different from my youth, still sings a hymn from ‘old’ with all the newer songs as well. Thanking God for music ministry in our churches.

When I read the lyrics of this hymn this morning, I realize how rich and full of truth it is. I have been taught there are 4 main things that we must know and experience as a chrstian. They are the gospel, Satan, the church according to our own vision, and Christ’s preeminence in ALL things. This morning I was impressed with how strong our enemy is. If you are fighting, you must know these strengths of your enemy or opponent. I’m afraid often times I am naïve of the craftiness of the enemy. He tends to creep into different areas of my life. But I remember in the gospels when the disciples were preaching the gospel They were taught to bind the strongman through prayer. Yes Satan is strong but God is stronger! Although it seems that the devil is winning now on earth, we know God’s Word will prevail and He like a fortress will keep us from evil.

to Jon; from Feb 12, 2024; The beginning of v 4, is refers to (as in v 2: Christ Jesus it is He”), the Word of God Who came in human flesh (“in-carnage”), He

Who is above all earthly powers, He endures & abides forever, triumphing over all , prevailing even through us, His body the church, in whom the Spirit and the gifts are at work in this world until His kingdom is established. All glory to God!
