About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

The greatest king on earth

Miscellaneous

Long Beach Songbook81
1
The greatest king on earth, that is King Solomon,
Fell in love with a country girl.
The king had to go to the countryside
And become a country man,
To change his status,
That he could court her.
In His courtship with her
She was changed to be his match,
To become his queen and Shulammite,
To become his counterpart
And become His loving bride.
This is the story of the Song of Songs.

The Song of Songs depicts our story with God
Of fallen man with the King of kings.
Because of His love for us,
He became a lowly man
To reach us and to die for our sins.
Then in resurrection He
Regenerated me
And now we’re daily being transformed.
To become the same as He with His life and nature
To become His counterpart, His match and bride.

Vietnamese lyric:

1. Hoàng đế lớn nhất thế giới,
Ngài là vua Sa-lô-môn,
Thật lòng yêu cô thôn nữ vô ngân;

Làm như anh nông dân cho tương xứng cùng nàng, Về miền quê để kiếm cô nàng;

Ngài che giấu hết hiển vinh hầu theo đuổi cô.
Đang khi tình yêu tiến triển, bên trong
Nàng gia tăng biến đổi,
Nên Tân Phụ, Hoàng Hậu, Nàng Su-la-mi-te;
Nàng thật xứng đáng với Đấng Christ,
Là Người Yêu Dấu Christ mong đợi.
Chuyện tình thiêng liêng, đẹp thay chìm trong Nhã Ca.

2. Kìa sách ấy đã diễn tả một chuyện tình rất thần thượng;
Một vị Vua yêu nhân thế hư hoại;
Tìm kiếm giữa thế giới, trông mong cứu từng người,
Ngài chịu làm thấp kém, khiêm hạ;
Vì yêu tất cả tội nhân, Ngài chịu chết thay.
Trong năng quyền phục sinh đây,
Tôi đã được sinh ra với Christ,
Bây giờ hằng ngày hồn tôi đổi thay;

Hoàn toàn giống Chúa ở bản chất, cùng một sự sống giống như Ngài,

Làm người phối ngẫu đẹp đôi, lòng Ngài thoả thay!
