This song was inspired by a poem that a man who went through unimaginable grief wrote. His name is Joseph and was born in Ireland. He fell in love with a woman and the day before he married her , she passed away. He them moves to Canada to start over and falls in love again with another woman named Eliza. Weeks before their wedding, she also passes away as well. he then gets news that his mother is about to pass away as well, but not having the funds to go and see her, he writes her a poem, a letter to his dying mother . In that letter he writes, "What a friend we have in Jesus..." That's someone who has a real friendship with God and trusts His goodness. Even with more grief coming, he can still talk of Jesus' friendship. Can you?
