Day by day, and with each passing moment

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till with Christ the Lord I stand.
Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till with Christ the Lord I stand.

I heard this song on a Gaither tape and was moved more than usual. For twenty-nine years, I have faced an unusual journey with the mental illness of my brother. Along with some other trials, I was ready to give up, but when I heard this song, I printed it off and framed it.

In bold print and underlined are the words, "As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure," This is the pledge to me He made.

Now I am printing it and enclosing it to a dear friend, Ed Minor, who

is suffering more than I can describe from the problems of radiation on his kidneys. Ed and Mary Ann, his wife, are inspirations to all who visit, but the doctors need a miracle to stop all these infections or we ask that God provide the physicians with needed

knowledge.

This hymn exhibits life-changing text for me and my family. Also, the music corresponds to add to the effect and affect of the words. I love it and am in touch with it daily. I love the Lord.

This song was given to us by a cousin after my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. We sang it when she was anointed for healing. Blessed be God our Father whose heart is kind beyond all understanding!

It comforts us: "in all our tribulations, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." (2 Cor. 1:4)

The assurance that 'the protection of His child and treasure is a CHARGE that upon Himself He laid' is all I need to know.

No matter how difficult my trial I am reminded that it will never be more than I can bear, nor is it outside of God's sovereign plan for my life; in fact, trials exhibit God's love in a miraculous way. These truths bring great comfort in the midst of my sorrow, strength in my weakness, and hope in my despair.

The English words to Day By Day were written by a relative of mine. Andrew L. Skoog was my grandmother's cousin. He was the organist and choir director at the First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. He also served on the Minneapolis City Council. He wrote and translated hundreds of hymns from Swedish to English. Day By Day is our family's unofficial Famiy Hymn.

The first time I heard this song was about 15 years ago. It came back to my mind tonight as I was praying.

May we continue to find strength in Him.
