Day by day, and with each passing moment

1
Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
2
Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
3
Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till with Christ the Lord I stand.

I took Lynne R's 2/25/2012 recommendation and bought the book. It has been a blessing. I look forward to waking up each moring to sing a new hymn. And I usually do not like daily devotionals.

Lynne shared a little of the story behind the hymn. Here's more:

Carolina Sandell Berg was never strong as a child, so she spent much time in her father's study and grew especially close to him. When she was 26, she accompanied her father, who was a parish pastor in Froderyd, Sweden on a voyage to Goteborg. As they stood on deck, the boat lurched and spilled Pastor Sandell overboard. The crew was unable to save him, and he drowned as his daughter looked on.

Berg was already well known for hymns she had published as a young girl, but this tragedy inspired many more. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

Someone from my church had shared with our church. This was when she was battling cancer, and my mom was battling breast cancer as well. I now found this site while I am trying to share it with my friend for her to share with her church while they now have a 22 year old battling Leukemia. This song is so true, I love the lyrics. Thank you for having this here for everyone to enjoy!

I like this song very much because it strengthens me. I want my daughter to sing this song in the church but no script. At last I've found the script! Thanks a lot. May your service to the Lord and mankind be a blessing to you and all.

I do declare today that this is a new favorite hymn of mine! The words are so comforting and practical, and the melody so sweet and easy to remember. I'm drawn to its Scandinavian roots since I am Norwegian. I hope it is a blessing to you too! :)

This is such a beautiful hymn and the prayer of my heart today. I thought of my parents' memorial service last year and wept as I listened to this. Thank You Jesus for Your love for us and giving us the faith to carry on.

I recently had a leg amputated with months in the hospital, rehab and now home rehab. While on the exercise machines, I thought of the words of this song over and over (along with "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place" and verses from the first chapter of James).

As a testimony to God's grace, He has kept me and my family from anger, bitterness, depression, envy of others or confusion. Knowing that "the protection of His child and treasure is a charge that on Himself He laid" got me through many lonely times, but never has He let my faith waver (for His glory). "Day by Day" is such a well-worded and solidly biblical expression that I have sung for years, but now means more to me now more than ever.

My little sister called today and shared this song with me. I have been ill for over 11 years and getting weaker. I have been broken a couple of times over these years. I have found out of weakness. He is my strength. The words that Lina wrote are so true and she could have only known them as truth... by the life of God's Son in her through the Holy Spirit. To trust our Lord's promises. We see His kindness, love, mercy and nearness to us. I love what she says about, "All my cares He wants to bear to cheer me." She could not have found what she did in Christ, during the death of her Dad, apart from God's revealing love, grace and kindness for her. It is encouraging to know what we are like apart from God's grace. Because then; He is the One who gets the glory because we know it's not of us. This will be a favorite song for me now.
