About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

Once it was the blessing

Experience of Christ As Everything

English513
1
Once it was the blessing,
Now it is the Lord;
Once it was the feeling,
Now it is His Word;
Once His gift I wanted,
Now, the Giver own;
Once I sought for healing,
Now Himself alone.

All in all forever,
Only Christ I’ll sing;
Everything is in Christ,
And Christ is everything.
2
Once ’twas painful trying,
Now ’tis perfect trust;
Once a half salvation,
Now the uttermost;
Once ’twas ceaseless holding,
Now He holds me fast;
Once ’twas constant drifting,
Now my anchor’s cast.
3
Once ’twas busy planning,
Now ’tis trustful prayer;
Once ’twas anxious caring,
Now He has the care;
Once ’twas what I wanted,
Now what Jesus says;
Once ’twas constant asking,
Now ’tis ceaseless praise.
4
Once it was my working,
His it hence shall be;
Once I tried to use Him,
Now He uses me;
Once the pow’r I wanted,
Now the Mighty One;
Once for self I labored,
Now for Him alone.
5
Once I hoped in Jesus,
Now I know He’s mine;
Once my lamps were dying,
Now they brightly shine;
Once for death I waited,
Now His coming hail;
And my hopes are anchored
Safe within the veil.

The original refrain has been altered in this version. Original:

All in all forever, Jesus will I sing

Everything in Jesus, and Jesus everything!

I like the original better and I think it "sings" better with the rhythm.

We sang this wonderful hymn dozens of times when I was a student at Nyack. Too bad I had to live so many years before I understood the meaning. Hope and joy surround me today because I have experienced the meaning of these words.

I wonder how much time, or what makes the "once" into "now". Between the "once" and the "now" are "painful trying",

"busy planning", "anxious care", "what I wanted" and....

May the Lord gain hearts who absolutely pursue Him until He can be seen, experienced and ministered as the One

who has the preeminence is all things!

Hi,

The second line of your refrain is incorrect. It should read:

"Jesus will I sing"

Thus:

All in all forever,
Jesus will I sing;
Everything is in Christ,
And Christ is everything.

Cheers

Lord, thank You that You are everything to us! You want us to be free from forms, teachings and gifts! We simply live You in our mingled spirit! Lord, there’s no need for us to ask gifts because we have You as the owner and giver of the gifts! Lord, there’s no need for us to ask power because we have You as our power! Lord, there is need for us to self-labor or self-struggle because we trust in You alone! We just simply trust and praise You! Hallelujah!

Today the Lord turned me to Himself the Author and Perfecter of my faith. Amen, it is not that I have to do but that I must trust the Lord. He Himself in substance as the Spirit in my spirit is my faith. He is God's gift to me and I ask Him and He gives to me the water of life that I may never thirst again nor drink from the world ever again. But simply to take Him as my allotted portion in everything. He Himself bodily is my faith in God. In Him I am saved never to be lost again. In Him I have God. Amen. Jesus Christ is Lord, Amen. He is everything, Amen, and everything is in Him. Amen.

Once I hoped in Jesus,
Now I know He's mine;
Once my lamps were dying,
Now they brightly shine;
Once for death I waited,
Now His coming hail;
And my hopes are anchored
Safe within the veil.
