Will your anchor hold in the storms of life

1
Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
  Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.
2
It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength divine.
3
It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers have told the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.
4
It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath;
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil.

I sang this song years ago as a young man and thought it was a fun little song. But now revisiting it and singing it as an older person, I am deeply touched by its imagery of the Christian as a ship in a stormy sea.

In verse 1, the hymnist sings of Christ as the ship's anchor straining against the tides in the storms of life. In verse 2, she sings of Christ as our safe harbor that can defy the blast of the storm. In verse 3, Christ firmly holds us at sea when passing through the straits of fear, protecting us from every angry wave. Finally, looking forward in verse 4, Christ will hold us in the floods of death, never failing us in the rising tide, our hopes abiding within the veil in the Lord's presence.

How poetic is this hymn with its seafaring imagery: anchors holding, strong tides lifting, cables straining, billowing clouds, safely mooring, ocean straits, threatening reefs, tempests raving, wild winds blowing, our bark (sailing vessel), cold waters, and rising tides.

This hymn is my School Anthem in Methodist Boy's High School in Oron Akwa Ibom State, right from 1991 till date I can still remember and sing the song as inspiration. Are they any old boys in the house? You know how we rolled it then

What a happy Sunday compulsory church attendance and then the Wednesday evening, being at the adult fellowship singing, "Jesu lover of my Soul", Abide with me", "Will your anchor hold" MHB 1 or 100 we must prepared to sing it loud and proud. I must say we had no idea the Gospel Messages packed in these hymnals that is fit to sustain us through life's treacherous journey. I thank God for the writers of these great and wonderful hymns, because now, as an adult, whenever I'm down I know "How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear". Amen🙏🏾
