Take the name of Jesus with you

Comfort in Trials By the Lord’s Name

English670
1
Take the name of Jesus with you,
Child of sorrow and of woe;
It will joy and comfort give you,
Take it then where’er you go.

Precious name! Oh, how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heav’n;
Precious name! Oh, how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heav’n.
2
Take the name of Jesus ever,
As a shield from every snare.
If temptations ’round you gather,
Breathe that holy name in prayer.
3
Oh, the precious name of Jesus,
How it thrills our souls with joy;
All the favor of the Father
In this name we may enjoy.
4
At the name of Jesus bowing,
Falling prostrate at His feet,
Claim His vict’ry over evil
And the enemy defeat.

Glad to be reminded of the power in the name of JESUS through this hymn at this point that I needed HIM most

Jesus ("Yahweh saves"), is made unto me, by the grace of God, the: Power of God, Wisdom of God, Righteousness of God, Sanctification of God, Redemption of God. I'll continue to glory in the Lord Jesus Christ, taking His name with me everywhere (1Co1:24, 30-31).

Lydia O. Baxter (1809–1874), was a bedridden invalid for much of her life, but that didn’t keep her from leading a life full of service and encouragement. She and her sister participated in establishing the Baptist Church in Petersburg, New York. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to New York City, where her home became known as a gathering place for preachers, evangelists, and Christian workers who would come to her for inspiration and advice. Even if she was bedridden, folks who paid a visit to her sick-room were not so much a comfort to her as they were encouraged by her in their own lives.

Mrs. Baxter studied the Bible carefully and especially enjoyed learning the meaning of the names mentioned in the Scriptures. Of all the biblical names she knew, the name of Jesus meant the most to her. Whenever she was questioned about her cheery disposition, despite her physical limitations, she would reply, “I have a very special armor. I have the name of Jesus. When the tempter tries to make me blue or despondent, I mention the name of Jesus, and he can’t get through to me anymore. ” The hymn, “Take the Name of Jesus with You, ” was most likely written by her in her sick-bed four years before her death in 1874. William H. Doane composed the music for this text shortly after Mrs. Baxter wrote it, and the hymn was first published in the hymnal, “Pure Gold, ” in 1871. The hymn was frequently used during the Moody-Sankey evangelistic campaigns, toward the end of the nineteenth century. Although she wrote a number of other gospel hymns, this is the only one that is still in wide use today. It has often been used in church services as a closing hymn since it provides an important reminder to go out each day, taking His name while sharing with others what Jesus has done for us. In a sense the hymn is a reality of the personal testimony of Lidia Baxter‘s experiences lifting high the name of Jesus throughout her life.

I woke up in the middle of the night, unable to sleep and trying to pray and read the word of God, when the Holy Spirit dropped this hymn that I have learnt from my childhood but forgotten over the years to my mind. Thank you Jesus, for the power in your name.

I'm always blessed when singing this hymn. Since my childhood in the Apostolic Church Cameroon at the Obili assembly we have been singing this hymn with a martial beat.
