Jesus! I am resting, resting

Experience of Christ Resting on Him

English579
1
Jesus! I am resting, resting
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee,
And Thy beauty fills my soul,
For, by Thy transforming power,
Thou hast made me whole.

Jesus! I am resting, resting
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.
2
Oh, how great Thy loving kindness,
Vaster, broader than the sea:
Oh, how marvelous Thy goodness,
Lavished all on me!
Yes, I rest in Thee, Beloved,
Know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise,
And have made it mine.
3
Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
I behold Thee as Thou art,
And Thy love, so pure, so changeless,
Satisfies my heart,
Satisfies its deepest longings,
Meets, supplies its every need,
Compasseth me round with blessings,
Thine is love indeed.
4
Ever lift Thy face upon me,
As I work and wait for Thee;
Resting ’neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus,
Earth’s dark shadows flee.
Brightness of my Father’s glory,
Sunshine of my Father’s face,
Keep me ever trusting, resting,
Fill me with Thy grace.

I have been in poor health for many years and so when I overtax my body, I am stopped quite suddenly as if my body put on the breaks. This morning, I was brought to this hymn to realize how merciful the Lord is to give me many opportunities to experience him as my rest. I heard the phrase “stop and smell the roses” many times but never related it to my Christian life. The Lord says in Matthew “Come unto me…and I will give you rest” How can I be brought into knowing the breadth, and length and height and depths of Christ (Eph 3:18) if I don’t learn to stop and experience Christ as my rest in these debilitating health restrictions. “Jesus I am resting, resting In the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness of thy loving heart” What a wonderful hymn to direct us into deeper experiences of Christ as our real rest!

Read about this hymn in Hudson Taylor’s biography. How blessed he was to know not only the words but the experience of it.

What a joy to come upon this 'site' as I sought out the comforts of "Jesus, I Am Resting" this early morning ..... O, how I long for this fellowship of like-minded 'hymn-lovers' .... my soul is so hungry for this! Please keep my close to your hearts......

A great song for those of us who have restless and unbelieving hearts. I like the old tune but wonder if one of our new contemporary composers would update the music for the newer generations. I would just remove the Thys and use more normal language.

I fall asleep most every night to these words and imagine my hands on the church piano keyboard learning to play this many years ago. When we accept the Lord Jesus... all anxiousness fades away and we can finally Rest in the thought of what He is... our Savior, Supplier, and Comforter.

Jesus bring us into that place of perfect trust and perfect rest. Help us to enter into Your rest and always know that peace of that perfect trust.
