Darkness reigns o'er this adult'rous, crooked world today;
Saints should shine, illumine near and far;
Honest and unfeigned, before man shine, God's life display—
We ought to shine, where'er we are.

Brighten the corner where you are!

Every morning we sang this song in my second grade class in Nashville, Tennessee.

Our teacher’s name was Miss Carothers. At the time I doubt any of us children knew what a harbor was much less what it meant to guide someone across the bar.

As an adult, I have learned the meaning of this song. We may not be meant to light up the whole world, but to be a shining light wherever we are. I have forgotten most of my teachers, but not this one. That was 1954.
