Lo, Mary gave You all she had, Released the sweet fragrance of nard; Disciples cried, “What waste, this deed!” But You carved it deep in Your heart. She broke her flask, offered herself, Cared not for their viewpoint at all; Her eyes, transfixed, saw just Yourself, By glorious beauty enthralled.

I can’t pour oil whene’er I please; Just while You still sit at the feast. Before it’s gone, this chance I’ll seize, Upon You, sweet ointment release. Though sometimes I’m fallen and low, Rebellious, rejecting and cold, If I just turn, what grace I know, And love that will not let me go!

Do I for self still harbor goals? Do I for base gain still aspire? Was ointment poured out just for show, Not truly for Your heart’s desire? Lord, rid me of natural self. I’d seek only You, all my days. Completely break me, Lord, I pray, Till meet as Your vessel I’m made.

O Jesus, Jesus, gladly I’d That deep love of Mary’s outpour, “Waste” all on You with all my might, No matter the cost, my dear Lord.
We have not seen the Lord, yet we believe in Him and we love Him. How wonderful this is! In the eyes of love, nothing that we do is too much if we are doing it for the Lord; nothing that we sacrifice or spend is a waste. In the eyes of the world, it was impractical, wasteful, and foolish for Mary to throw away three hundred denarii in an instant. Judas was more down-to-earth, practical, wise, and thoughtful about humanity. But the Lord would rather see the church filled with foolish Marys than see one wise Judas. Once and for all the Lord laid down the rule of judgment for the church. Should the principle of the church life be one of loving Christ or one of pragmatism?
Do I for self still harbor goals?
Do I for base gain still aspire?
Was ointment poured out just for show,
Not truly for Your heart’s desire?
Lord, rid me of natural self.
I’d seek only You, all my days.
Completely break me, Lord, I pray,
Till meet as Your vessel I’m made.
